This video aims to illuminate the lives of three of the more than 300 women who participated in the Moroccan resistance. The three women recount their experiences during the years 1953 to 1956. On its own, the video does not provide the necessary historical background needed for the topic, but that context is supplied by the accompanying book Voices of the Resistance..

Meyer, B. (1999). "Popular Ghanaian cinema and "African heritage"." Africa Today 46: 92-114.
The Ghanaian popular cinema industry, which developed at the end of the 1980s, is considered. It is noted that the themes of the films produced reflect the struggles of urban people, concern with occult themes, and the dream of a modern way of living. The perceived contrast between popular cinema and high art is analyzed through a comparison of the internationally acclaimed Heritage Africa and the popular films Beast Within and Not Without. It is argued that whereas high art is concerned with the emancipation of the colonized intellectual and attempts to restore authentic cultural roots, popular cinema focuses on the intricacies of ordinary people's lives in the city without drawing any rigid opposition between African tradition and European modernity.

Norman, S. (2000). Othello in South Africa : Race and Reception in Janet Suzman's production.
My project has as its focus a 1987 film of a theatrical production of Othello directed by Janet Suzman in South Africa. I begin by positioning it against the largely colonial production history of the text, in an attempt to investigate the extent to which the production might be called genuinely "post-colonial." Against this background, I argue that the production renders an intesely local reading of the play, by means of its emphasis on, for example, racial tensions and violence. I then conduct a detailed analysis of the last scene in an attempt to indicate the manner in which the production interrogates the dominant local understanding of issues of race and gender.
